Earth Day Finds Greener Buildings
Earth Day this year found
investors and owner-users embracing sustainability in their building assets. Their goals has been to increase their expertise
in the construction of green buildings, lower energy consumption in existing buildings, measure the carbon footprint of their
building assets and work towards reducing its impact, and increase occupancy of the eco-certified spaces in their portfolios
wherever possible. The second largest city in America, Los Angeles, embarked on one of its most ambitious projects to combat global warming, becoming the biggest city
in the nation to impose "green" building rules that would potentially cut millions of tons of pollution over the
next decade. In a unanimous vote, the City Council passed an ordinance requiring builders of large commercial and residential
developments to adopt such measures as planting drought-resistant landscaping and using recycled materials and energy-efficient
HVAC and lighting. So far, one state, Connecticut, and 14 cities are requiring private developers to meet green building standards.
