LEED Advances the Greening of America’s Buildings

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released a strategic plan for the next five years that would broaden its mission far beyond sustainable building certification to more fully embrace its leadership role in the nation’s green building movement for existing buildings and new construction.

However, LEED-EB-certified buildings still trail those certified under the LEED for New Construction (LEED-NC) platform by a ratio of more than 12-to-1. Further complicating matters, LEED-NC buildings sometimes present their own set of challenges after joining the existing stock, when those involved in the design and construction leave.

It is an exciting time as municipalities join states and the federal government in efforts to green America’s buildings, but there is much to be done.
